The Periodic Table of Elements 9th Grade Science Department
Description of Project:This is a culminating activity for a unit in Chemistry on the Periodic Table of Elements. Students will work in groups to discover all the information they can about a particular element. They will then create an advertisement trying to sell that element to the general public. They will need to be creative in “selling” their element. Students will video record their advertisements and present them to their classmates.

Identify pure substances by their physical and chemical properties (i.e., color, luster/reflectivity, hardness, conductivity, density, pH, melting point, boiling point, specific heat, solubility, phase at room temperature, chemical reactivity).
b. Classify elements as metals, nonmetals, metalloids (semi-conductors), and noble gases according to their location on the Periodic Table.
c. Describe the information provided by the atomic number and the mass number (i.e., electrical charge, chemical stability.)
d. Predict the chemical reactivity of elements, and the type of bonds that may result between them, using the Periodic Table.

Review of Digital Libraries: I thought this site was easy to use. I liked the subject search, and using keywords brought even better results specific to my topic. My only complaint is that a lot of the links were broken to sites that looked really interesting. Needs to be updated more frequently.

Review of eThemes: I thought this site provided great websites for different content areas. I liked how searching was in alphabetical order, and results were easy to look through and well organized. I did feel that a majority of the websites were geared toward elementary students, but was still able to find some useful information. The descriptions of the sites were great.

Review of IPL2: I liked the searching method on IPL2, you start broad with the subject area, and then narrow your search down using more specific topics located on the right hand sidebar of the page. I thought this site had some great resources appropriate for high school and older, there was not too much for elementary on my topic.

Review of Kathy Schrock’s Guide for Educators: While the resource list is not as extensive, most of the links were current and working. I really liked the way the site was organized, by general subject, and then tabs at the top of the page for different specific areas in that subject.

Review of netTrekker: Loved this site (of course I did, it is subscription based). My favorite features included readability levels and overall ratings for each site. The search results were well organized, with easy to read annotations describing the site. This site was so easy to use, and yielded excellent results. This is my personal favorite!
